The Stone Block Majlis
مجلس الكتل الحجرية
An outdoor majlis whose seats are designed from single blocks of stone, so that the stone is part of the seating itself.
01
The idea
In this project the design began with the stone itself. I did not treat it as a finish added to the seat, but as the mass that makes the seat and gives it its presence. The whole concept follows from that: one block of stone for every main seat.
02
The single block
Every seat here rests on a single block of stone, present in the space as an architectural element before it is a piece of furniture. I left its surface rough, because I wanted the stone to remain stone even as a seat.

03
Stone and the majlis
Stone and the majlis are both familiar in our homes in Jordan: we build with one and gather in the other. What I did here was bring them together in one composition. The majlis stays as we know it, seats facing each other around a table for hospitality and conversation, but this time it comes from stone and lives in the open air.

04
Composition
The composition is simple: seats gathered around a round stone table, with a wall behind them that holds the firewood. Around them are red gravel and planting, while the stone remains the strongest presence in the scene.

Nothing here is more than stone and a place to sit. That is what I wanted.
